The dunnock, or hedge sparrow, is currently on the amber list. It is a very quiet, unassuming and shy bird, keeping very much to itself and shuffling around in low vegetation. The species is a favourite host nest of the cunning cuckoo, who will lay its egg in the dunnock’s nest. However the dunnock has several broods in a year which means it’s population can be stable, despite the cuckoo taking over.
